Khairullah Hamdard, the owner and director of Wakhjir Brand, started his journey into entrepreneurship a year ago after he got his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Karwan University.
He saw that many Afghan consumers were buying a lot of cheap, knock-off, and imported goods. This inspired Khairullah to produce and showcase Afghan-produced, original handmade products into the market. He also wanted to become independent in his career and create jobs for others in his community. Using his entreprentueral vision and drive to improve lives in Afghanistan, he saw an opportunity to create a business and went into it without hesitation. And with that, Wakhjir brand was founded in 2020.
Khairullah started his business with a focus on care and high standards. He brought in professionals from Turkey to train his staff in Kabul to produce high quality bags, purses and shoes. At the very beginning, Khairullah wanted to sell bags, purses and shoes made specifically in Takhar Province of Afghanistan. Takhar is known for having items made from gand fabric all over afghanistan. To accomplish this, he understood that a lot of work needed to be done because the quality of work he had seen from that region was quite low.
Even as the pandemic slept the world and Afghanistan was under lockdown during the Covid-19 crisis, he did not lose hope that he could start and sustain Wakhjir. He initially set aside the money for the shop and staff salaries by borrowing money from relatives and friends. Even though Wakhjir's products do not include those from Takhar’s producers, Khairullah still coordinates with them, gives them notes and supports them.
In his shop, Khairullah offers a wide variety of products, including bags, purses and shoes. All of his designs include some traces of Afghan gand fabric which in Khairullah’s view bring out Afghan’s culture and signature that people love. In the future, he hopes to include clothing, men’s bags, and shoes into his brand’s offerings.
What sets apart Wakhjir’s products from others is that firstly, these products’ quality is much higher than those of the imported goods. Secondly, each and every one of Wakhjir’s products is made with environmental sustainability in mind, sourced sustainably and made by producing minimum waste. Finally, each product is made with longevity and durability in mind, so that a customer can enjoy their Wakhjir product for a long, long time.
Even thoughWakhjir was started only a year ago, many people know and love his brand from Afghanistan and hopefully soon, around the world. Khairullah hopes to showcase Afghans culture and tradition through his product by partnering with ASEEL and expanding his business to become globally well known for high quality handmade products.
