Nuristan Fashion lies in the heart of Nuristan, one of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces and a sparsely populated area in eastern Afghanistan. Bordered by Lagman and Kunar provinces on its southern border, the area also is near
countries like Pakistan. Most known for agriculture, animal husbandry, and day labor, Nuristan also has a rich tradition of beautiful products. Much of Nuristan has been made into national parks, in order to protect the
biodiversity of the region.
Though the origins of the Nuristani people are unknown, the region has experienced, Buddhist, Hindu, and Muslim influences throughout its history, lending the artisnal products out of its region a distinct and rich
flavor. Nuristan means “land of illumination.” This illumination continues as many of Nuristan’s populations continue to attempt to establish trade and commerce routes with Pakistan, despite guerilla fighters on both
sides engaging in near-constant conflict.
These trade and commerce routes have led to the clothing and products from the region to have cultural influences from all the different cultures that Nuristan has shared borders with or touched through trade. Nuristani
clothing is brightly patterned with rich colors on darker backgrounds.
Nuristan Fashion wants to change the image of its borderland province, and share its rich, diversely-influenced fashion with the world. The owner of the shop, Muhammad Ismail Ghamyalh Haneif, has owned Nuristan Fashion
for nearly 5 years. Based in Parun, the capital of the province, the company wishes to showcase the original and rich culture of ancient Nuristan, and share it with the modern world through technology.
All that is sold through Nuristan Fashion is hand-sewn or handmade by Nuristani artisans. And the patterns and decor on the clothing, with bright colors and detailed geometric or floral patterns reflect the rich history
of the region. Through the promotion of Nuristani-style clothing and other items, Haneif hopes to not only share the culture of the province with the rest of the world, but also to help rebuild his border province up to
its full potential. Aseel is proud to partner with Nursitani Fashion and promote a region so rich in history and culture.
