Mohsina Saqeb, owner and founder of Jama-e- Saqeb Handicraft Production Company (Jama Design) has always wanted to use her education and love of design to make an impact. Following the completion of her Master’s in Business Administration and experience in a number of NGOs, she started her company in January 2017.
Mohsina has always wanted to serve Afghanistan, especially women by providing them employment opportunities and training in sewing and design. Very quickly, the business progressed well, from only two tailors to now more than 33 staff members, 65% who are women, both in production and support departments. Jama Design also employs more than 200 home-based women in Kabul and other provinces who regularly produce handmade materials for the company.
Since its founding, Jama Design has expanded into not only women’s fashion, but also carpets and furniture, opening two new branches, Jama Carepts and Jama Furniture. Jama’s specialty remains using best quality handmade materials mostly made by Afghan women in any of its products specially dresses that include both classic/traditional and modern styles as well as a mix of classic and modern designs.
Jama currently offers beautifully designed dresses for women, as well as clothing and bags styled from various Afghan regions, as well as some furnishings, including carpets. Jama has a long-term strategy and will expand step by step if the business goes well and security situation of the country allow us to continue developing further. The company aims to promote the Afghan tradition of handicraft and to bridge between traditional clothes and more modern styles. Jama hopes with its outsourcing to women all over the country as well as its hiring and training of women in designing and tailoring to improve rural and urban women’s livelihood and economy.
Within the period of three and half years Mohsina’s business has achieved rapid expansion as one of the top design companies in Afghanistan, participated in global exhibitions and fashion shows in the UAE, Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan; and has received awards from organizations and publications all over Afghanistan for her work promoting women in fashion.
Mohsina is proud to be an Afghan businesswoman and contribute in the improving of her country’s economy situation. And she is excited to continue Jama Design’s partnership with ASEEL so that her designs can reach more customers globally and she can continue to expand her in-country operations, hire more employees, and train more women in design.
